Apple buys Beats for $3bn

Jimmy Iovine, Tim Cook, Dr. Dre, and Eddie Cue

Apple® today announced it has agreed to acquire the critically acclaimed subscription streaming music service Beats Music, and Beats Electronics, which makes the popular Beats headphones, speakers and audio software.

The acquisition of Beats doesn’t real make sense to me, but find it really interesting that, in the press release, Apple is putting Beats Music ahead of the headphone business.

I’m also curious about whether Apple will keep Beats as an independent brand. It doesn’t seem like a particularly “Apple” thing to do (whatever that means), but the press release makes it seem like that’s what’s happening…

I guess we’ll just need to wait and see.
